Online marketing is all about making words pop! That’s the key strategy when coming up with content or social media. That also applies to your email marketing subject lines. You want to ensure that your customers or subscribers are enticed enough to click with some eye-catching email subject lines, so try these marketing tips on for size.

Wowing with Good Email Marketing Subject Lines

A simple “Hey” in the subject line is just fine if you’re talking to your grandma, but if you’re sending out a newsletter with that, no one’s gonna want to open it. It just doesn’t say enough.

It’s highly encouraged to get creative with your email marketing subject lines, so have fun with it. Studies show that 33% of people open their emails based solely on the subject line.  

Make ‘em laugh, make ‘em laugh, make ‘em laugh!

Your sense of humor is a powerful tool and email marketing subject lines are a perfect opportunity to make ‘em laugh! Being funny is a great way to humanize your voice, which can bring you closer to your audience—being human is key in maintaining a relationship with your audience. The best email subject lines for sales are the ones that speak on a relatable and fun level.

It’s simple. Just be relatable! Quoting movies or books is always a safe bet when it comes to humorous subject lines. People will appreciate that being in the midst of the all too often mundane world that is their inbox.

For example, you can quote Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland and say “O Frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! Check out these deals, what do you say?!” Or from the classic Jerry Maguire, “Show me the money!”

Those are a couple of examples that I just made up, but go ahead and use them. I don’t care. I’m sure you can come up with something funny and original, though. I have faith in you.

Entice their curiosity with clever ambiguity

It isn’t technically “click bait” if clicking pays off. Sometimes people need a little mental stimulation to lead them where you want. That’s where you come in.

Your email marketing subject line is a promise that something magical and awesome lies one click away. Without trying to sound too dramatic, people are drawn to the mystery. So instead of telling them what’s in your email, make them want to find out!

For example, you should say something like:

  • “Wow! I can’t believe this!”
  • “I didn’t know this was possible!”
  • “Last chance to check out this cool thing I’m talking about!”
  • “Holy moly, what an email!”

Whatever the question is, answer it in your email. Make it worth it to them, and they’ll keep coming back!

Remember the goal is drive traffic to your website so always put a link in the email.

Promise to make their lives easier

At this point, you know your audience rather well. You know why they need your service, even if they don’t know… yet.

It’s essentially telling people what they want to hear before they go looking for it. Bring up what it is that you do and an incentive that comes along with it. For example, if your company makes puzzles you can say something like “Don’t go broke feeding your jigsaw puzzle addiction. We can help you.”

Mention something that would otherwise stress them out or draw them away, like the high cost of something, and then be the solution to their problem (e.g. “Our stuff is cheaper than the rest! Never stress again!”)

This is a good opportunity to bring up what special offers and deals you have that truly makes you stand out against the rest.

Say their names and be conversational

Seriously, just making your personal email marketing subject lines more personal is proven to draw people in.

While people scroll through their inboxes, they’ll more than likely stop at their names. It’s like we’re naturally drawn like a magnet to any mentions we get. But it actually is a little bit more than that… people actually want and hope for a personal interaction from their services. It makes us all feel like we’re very important to the person sending the email. Otherwise, they wouldn’t call you by name.

Plus, making it conversational demonstrates how much you’re valued as a customer.

Here’s what it should look like:

  • “Kasey, these deals are going away fast!”
  • “Good evening, Mr. Fox! We thought you’d be interested in…”
  • “Hello, friend…”
  • “Haven’t seen you in a while…”

It’s also good to pay attention to what your customers are interested in so that you can send emails with suggestions. Suggestions that pertain to some new items you have in stock that are similar to things they’ve purchased before. Whatever they’ve had in their carts.

Speaking of…

Follow up on items they left in their carts

It happens. Whether people decide they don’t want it anymore, it was too expensive, or they just simply forgot about it when the phone rang— items will be left behind. Doesn’t matter, because as soon as you make a mention of it, they’ll be thinking about it again.

Show them you were paying attention with examples like this:

  • “I noticed you left an item in your cart… how does 25% off sound?”
  • “Good news! That lawn mower you wanted is ON SALE! GET IT BEFORE DEAL ENDS!”
  • “You still there? You still have items in your cart.”
  • “Your item: My Little Pony light-up sneakers NOW 50% OFF!”

Remember that there’s a reason they abandoned their cart. You want to give them every incentive you can to come back and finish checking out. Reward them for being your customer and let them know that you were paying attention.
