Make a List and Grow It Twice: How to Get More Email Subscribers

This holiday season, we’re reflecting on the gift that keeps on giving: email marketing. This digital marketing strategy allows you to connect with your target audience in a personal, direct way. It’s effective marketing that can bring you a great ROI. However, not everyone is as adept at making lists as Mr. Kris Kringle. If you’re having trouble growing and maintaining your email marketing list this winter, take some advice from Father Christmas.

The Gift of Email Marketing

Email marketing offers businesses of any industry many benefits. First and foremost, it can create a deep connection with your audience. Your emails can remind specific users about your services or business if they haven’t interacted with you in a while. Also, you can provide your audience with updates on company policies, changes in prices, new products, and more.

Effective email marketing can also encourage people to make a purchase, meaning you’ll receive a decent return on investment after initiating email marketing automation services. This method allows you to pre-create and send emails to specific categories of your audience members. Meaning, your audience will get a targeted email specifically for them, and certain software rams can send out those emails without you lifting a finger!

But, what if you don’t have any people to send your emails to?

Tips from Santa: How to Grow Your Email List

Mr. Claus is a professional at growing long lists. He’s got such a high demand that he has to categorize his followers—and check the lists twice! Seems like we can learn a thing or two from the big bearded guy about creating lists. If you’re looking for ways to grow email marketing lists, you’ve come to the right place.

There’s nothing wrong with a good ol’ paper sign-up sheet

Santa is an old-fashioned guy. He stills keeps his Naughty and Nice Lists on good ol’ rolls of parchment. And there’s nothing wrong with that! If you have a brick and mortar business, keep a paper sign-up sheet at your checkout counter.

When people make a purchase, ask them if they’d like to sign up for your email newsletter, full of special deals and exclusive updates. It may seem a little outdated, but you may find many people are willing to sign up for an email list when they’re in-person interacting with your product and your staff.

This can also work great at a sign-in table at any event you host!

Make it easy to sign up on your website

Imagine your target audience is similar to that of Mr. Claus—a bunch of bright-eyed five-year-olds. Now, when these little ones try to become your email subscribers, will they be able to find your form, or will this task end in a temper tantrum?

While your audience may not be made of kindergarteners, you should still make it as easy as possible to sign up for your email marketing list. Create a form fill that’s easy to find, simple to fill out, and that only asks for necessary information. If you have too much going on on a landing page, people may leave without signing up, and we don’t want that!

Collect emails when people RSVP for an event

Another tactic for growing your email marketing list is to collect emails when people sign up to attend an event. When people sign up to attend an event, they usually fill out their contact information, anyway. This is a great opportunity to ask for their email address as well, to be put into your marketing list. Start by contacting them with information about the event, but afterwards, you’ll still have their address to follow up with updates and specials.

Offer something of value in exchange

Many people will refuse to give their email address if they don’t get anything out of the interaction. Offer something of value in exchange for their contact information, like an educational whitepaper, a resourceful how-to guide, an exclusive deal, or first-to-know company updates. Make them feel special about being subscribed to your email newsletters.

Gather email address from your members

If your business has memberships, that’s also a great opportunity to ask for email address. When they sign up for a membership, include email addresses in the contact information you request. These users should be particularly useful to have in your email marketing list; they’ve already made a commitment to show their interest in your brand.
